Sebanyak 400 tentara Rusia dan pasukan pendukung Pemerintah Suriah tewas dalam pertempuran 4 jam dengan pasukan AS di Timur Suriah. The New York Time mengabarkan, dalam pertempuran yang terjadi 7 Februari 2018 lalu, tidak satu pun dari 40 tentara AS yang menjadi korban.

Sejumlah sumber yang didapat Harian NYT mengungkapkan kejadian bermula tatkala ratusan tentara Suriah dibantu pasukan Rusia, tiba-tiba muncul menuju ke arah pasukan AS yang tengah berada di dekat pengilangan Conoco, dekat Kota Deir al-Zair, Timur Suriah. Tim pasukan AS segera menghubungi Pentagon dan Komando militer Rusia di Moscow untuk menanyakan kehadiran pasukan Rusia. ‘’Bila terjadi pertempuran dengan Rusia, maka perang besar akan berkobar,’’ tutur salah satu pasukan AS.
Dari Moscow diperoleh jawaban bahwa mereka bukanlah pasukan Rusia. Malah pihak militer Rusia juga telah diberitahu bahwa jumlah pasukan yang melakukan komunikasi menggunakan bahasa Rusia itu semakin bertambah. ‘’Wah kami tidak bisa mengendalikan mereka, apalagi mereka bukan pasukan Rusia,’’ tegas militer Rusia.
Belakangan diketahui bahwa mereka adalah pasukan bayaran Rusia dari Wagner Group. Kelompok ini dikenal disewa oleh pasukan militer Rusia. Juga sejumlah pasukan pendukung Presiden Bashar al-Assad. ‘’Komando Tertinggi Rusia di Suriah menjamin, mereka bukan pasukan Rusia,’’ tutur Menteri Pertahanan AS Jim Mattis dalam penjelasannya di depan Senat, bulan lalu.
Pertempuran tak terelakkan lagi, tatkala tentara bayaran Rusia merangsek menuju posisi Conoco dengan truk dan kendaraan artileri lain. Terlindung oleh debu pekat akibat kendaraan militer Rusia itu, 30 anggota Delta Force dan Rangers dari Komando Operasi Gabungan AS melakukan serangan balik. Sementara sejumlah pesawat tempur F-22 Stealth dan F-15E serta pengebom B-52 dikerahkan untuk membantu membebaskan pasukan komando yang terkepung itu. Sekitar 15 pasukan baret hijau juga ikut dilibatkan dalam operasi penyelamatan itu.
Jumlah korban di pihak lawan mencapai sekitar 200 hingga 300 orang. Namun Rusia mengaku hanya 4 pasukannya yang tewas. ‘’Paling banyak belasan orang,’’ kata seorang perwira Rusia. Sementara seorang opsir Suriah mengaku sekitar 100 orang tentaranya jadi korban.
