Menteri Kelautan dan Perikanan RI, Susi Pudjiastuti, menjadi perhatian media asing saat New York Times menerbitkan sebuah artikel berjudul “A ‘Little Bit of a Nut Case’ Who’s Taking On China” pada Jumat (8/6).
Artikel yang masuk dalam kanal sosok di Asia-Pasific pada laman itu, menceritakan sosok Susi sebagai menteri yang berani mengambil kebijakan tegas dengan menangkap dan menenggelamkan kapal-kapal asing yang masuk ke perairan Indonesia, terutama dari China dan Asia Tenggara. Besarnya potensi kelautan Indonesia, membuat Susi tidak gentar untuk menyatakan perang kepada pencuri ikan yang memasuki teritorial perairan Indonesia.
New York Times menyebutkan bahwa sejak Susi menerapkan langkah tegas itu, setidaknya 10.000 kapal nelayan asing telah diusir dari perairan Indonesia. Kinerja perikanan nasional pun naik lebih dari dua kali lipat pada periode 2013 hingga 2017, menurut data pemerintah. Kendati langkah Susi dalam menenggelamkan kapal asing pencuri ikan sempat diprotes karena memakan biaya dan mencemaskan investor, namun kinerja itu membuat Susi menjadi salah satu menteri populer dan disukai dalam kabinet Presiden Joko Widodo.
Laman New York Times juga mengangkat sosok lain Susi sebagai pemilik perusahaan penerbangan Susi Air yang gemar meminum kopi dengan kepribadian yang tegas dan apa adanya. Penampilan Menteri KKP yang mengenakan kebaya rancangan desainer Anne Avantie dan berjalan anggun di atas panggung Indonesian Fashion Week, Maret 2018, juga diceritakan sebelum bagian akhir artikel itu.
