Two Leading Nonprofits For Community-Building and Poverty Alleviation in Philadelphia Have Officially Joined Forces

On Monday, June 20, 2022 at the Mamie Nichols Center, 1529 South 22nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146, Diversified Community Services (DCS), a non-profit leader in providing social services in South Philadelphia and United Communities, a non-profit leader serving the multicultural community in Southeast Philadelphia, have joined forces and officially merged to form the Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance.

Otis Bullock, CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance, and Francis Carney, former Executive Director of United Communities Southeast Philadelphia and current COO of GPCA.

With an unveiling of the official name and new logo design, the two leading nonprofit human and social service organizations, DCS & United Communities alliance will create one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the City of Philadelphia with a focus on improving the quality of life for every member of the South Philadelphia community who need access to supportive services and/or financial resources. The new organization, Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance will provide the same excellent services, just under one umbrella. The mission is the same, providing high-quality services that breaks the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Otis Bullock will be the Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance and Francis Carney, former Executive Director of United Communities, will remain with the new entity and serve as Chief Operating Officer. “We are thrilled with the potential to deliver high-caliber, quality services and more expansive financial resources to our clients for many years to come….We will be creating one of the largest human service organizations in the region, expanding our footprint, addressing poverty alleviation and offering additional youth, family, and community development services and formulating one of the most unique public engagement teams in City of Philadelphia,” said Otis Bullock, CEO, Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance.

The merger exploration and implementation were funded by The Repositioning Fund. As part of the merger, the organizations will explore new ways to develop new services, expand across the City of Philadelphia while continuing to reduce poverty. The formulation of the Greater Philadelphia Community Alliance will allow us to enhance our reputation and appeal in the Philadelphia market. The merger will improve administrative and fundraising capacity, increase human resources capacity and foster a more cohesive and safer work environment.

Diversified Community Services and United Communities are no stranger in joining forces to address the needs of the City of Philadelphia’s vulnerable citizens. The two organizations along with various partner organizations recently formed The South Philadelphia Community Fund, funded by United Way’s Poverty Action Fund in partnership with City Council, a one-stop-shop family stability grant to help struggling families and alleviate the repercussions of the pandemic. The alliance would not have been possible without the hard work of DCS and United Communities’ staff; people who do the work to empower families and communities every day. Francis Carney added, “The merger presents an unprecedented opportunity to create the largest nonprofit organization devoted to human empowerment, operating across the geographic spectrum, from South Philadelphia throughout the entire Philadelphia region.
