Pengusaha perempuan bernama Vivi Sembel Lapian ini cukup dikenal di kementerian perdagangan dan pendidikan Indonesia. Sebab Vivi adalah pengrajin perhiasan mutiara yang acapkali berpameran di luar negeri, terutama di Amerika Serikat.
Karya-karya perhiasannya dikerjakan bersama ipar dan sepupunya. ‘’Karya-karya saya banyak dibeli para pedagang mutiara asing,’’ tuturnya kepada Indonesianlantern.com. ‘’Harganya berkisar antara $ 150 hingga $ 500, atau setara maksimum Rp 7,5 juta,’’ lanjut Vivi, ibu empat anak, dan istri dari Prof. Roy Sembel.
Ketrampilan menciptakan perhiasan diperoleh saat berjalan-jalan di Pasar Jatinegara, Jakarta. Saat itu Vivi melihat ada perhiasan yang terdiri dari perhiasan mote atau manik-manik terbuat dari plastik. ‘’Dari situlah saya tertarik membuat perhiasan dari mutiara, pengganti plastik tadi,’’ tuturnya ibu 4 orang anak.
Salah satu putrinya pernah bertugas di China dan mengenakan perhiasan bikinan ibunya. ‘’Banyak yang tertarik dan membeli perhiasan itu,’’ tutur Vivi yang mendapatkan pelajaran menciptakan perhiasan dari nenek dan ibunya.
Dalam kesempatan ini, Vivi berterima kasih kepada para ibu yang membantunya sehingga sukses. Terutama Ibu Endang Arifi, istri dari Arifi Saiman, mantan Konsul Jenderal RI New York, yang mengajak berpameran keliling AS.
