Please join us for a very special night as we celebrate two milestones in the Philadelphia Indonesian community: From Bali to Bala turns 20 years old, and Modero Dance Company is celebrating their 5th Anniversary. Join us for our Indonesian Pesta & Party with a delicious and festive Indonesian buffet dinner, dance performance by Modero, photos of you in our own antique Indonesian becak (pedicab), screening of the 1935 film from Bali: Legong – Dance of the Virgins, and great company and socializing with fans of ours from all around. Wear you finest Indonesian or traditional attire: it’s a Pesta Kebayah!

From its early beginnings – when Laura Cohn carried boxes of handcrafts on her return flights from Indonesia – to this year’s 20th annual show, Laura has worked to bring Indonesian culture to an American audience in the Philadelphia region.

For over two decades, visitors have experienced the From Bali to Bala’s annual show, whether in Laura’s living room in the early years; at locations in Old City or Manayunk; to its home for the past seven years in Chestnut Hill. From Bali to Bala continues to build a deep connection to the distant, exotic land of Indonesia; the show features hand-selected crafts and treasures for sale, Laura’s own batik paintings, and evocative elements of Indonesian culture in film, dance, foods, sights and smells.

Modero Dance Company

By happy coincidence, this is also the 5th anniversary of Modero Dance Company. Modero’s founder, Sinta Penyami, combines traditional Indonesian and modern dance disciplines, offering a fusion that brings the best of both worlds. She is a vibrant dancer, teacher and performer.

Sinta & Laura’s missions complement each other with their shared desire to expose others to the richness of Indonesia through dance and the arts at large, building a bridge between our two countries.

From Bala to Bali

Advance tickets for the festivities are $20 per person, and the celebration will take place on Saturday night, November 26th at 7:30 PM, at From Bali to Bala, 8335 Germantown Avenue, in the Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia.
