Rupanya, dua warga Indonesia ini sering terlibat pertengkaran sebelum peristiwa berdarah itu terjadi. ‘’Lu kan sudah tahu gua yang ulang tahun, kenapa lu tinggal sama teman-teman lain?,’’ lanjut Ferry sambil mengeluarkan umpatan. Esok pagi harinya, Ferry bermaksud menitipkan kue ulang tahun semalam ke rumah teman lainnya, karena kue itu tidak muat disimpan dalam kulkas di apartemennya.
Entah karena sudah merasa jengkel atau faktor lain, pagi itu Ferry kembali ke apartemennya di lantai dua dan bertengkar hebat dengan Yenni di dapur. Pada saat itulah, diduga kekesalannya dilampiaskan dengan menusukkan pisau dapur (dugaan sementara) berkali-kali ke leher dan kedua kaki korban hingga tewas.
Sejauh ini belum ada penjelasan resmi dari Kantor Kepolisian Kawasan Philadelphia yang bermarkas di South 11st Street, Philadelphia.
Tersangka Ferry pernah bercerita ke salah satu rekannya bahwa ia telah bercerai dengan istrinya yang kini masih tinggal di Jakarta. Ferry mengenal Yeni, yang lebih dahulu berangkat ke AS. Sejak pertengahan Juli lalu ibu berusia 55 tahun itu pindah dari New York ke Philadelphia. Yeni berstatus janda, karena suaminya meninggal dunia. Setelah menyatu dengan Ferry barulah mereka sama-sama menyewa aparteman di lantai 2 di apartemen beralamat di 2117 South 7th Street sejak bulan Oktober 2023.
Menurut penuturan salah satu sesama penghuni apartemen, kedua pasangan itu sering terlibat pertengkaran dan suara mereka cukup keras, sehingga terdengar oleh para penghuni apartemen lainnya, sesama pendatang Indonesia.
Kabar burung menyebutkan Ferry memang gemar berjudi. Seperti halnya penggemar kasino lainnya, ia bersama beberapa temannya pernah berkunjung ke beberapa kasino di akhir pekan.
