Pastor Joel Osteen, pemimpin Gereja Lakewood, Houston dikecam banyak pihak karena tak bersedia membuka pintu gerejanya untuk menampung para pengungsi banjir yang melanda Texas.
ABC News mengabarkan Rabu (30/8/2017), dalam penjelasannya Joel Osteen menyatakan ‘’Kami di sini untuk rakyat banyak. Kami adalah tempat penampungan untuk pengungsi,’’ katanya di acara Good Morning America. ‘’Kami akan menampung warga setelah banjir mereda,’’ ujar Joel Osteen yang berhasil menjadi miliuner setelah menjadi pemimpin Mega Church.
Bantahan itu diungkapkan Joel Oesteen, setelah Gereja Lakewood miliknya memasang pengumuman lewat Facebook. Isinya menyatakan ‘’Gereja kami tidak dapat diakses karena banjir bandang yang sangat besar. Karena itu kami meminta agar warga mencari tempat penampungan lain,’’ tulis pengumuman gereja yang memiliki stadion berkapasitas 16 ribu tempat duduk.
Pengumuman itu dikecam banyak pihak karena Gereja Lakewood pernah menjadi tempat penampungan pengungsi saat Badai Katrina berlangsung tahun 2005. ‘’Joel Osteen yang punya gereja megah dan raksasa itu hanya menawarkan doa,’’ tulis @kbarnie34. Sedangkan kritik lain berbunyi: ‘’Meski dikecam, Joel Osteen tidak juga membantu untuk membuka pintu gerejanya,’’ tulis Chase Donahue. Sebaliknya, saat Badai Harvey berlangsung pekan lalu, seluruh masjid di Negara Bagian Texas membuka diri untuk menampung para pengungsi, tanpa memandang agama dan ras mereka.
‘’Bukan. Bukan begitu maksud kami,’’ kata Joel Osteen yang pandai bicara itu. Menurutnya, gerejanya memiliki masalah keamanan bangunan, terutama bagian bawah tanah, yang dikhawatirkan terendam banjir. ‘’Kami akan mencoba warga dengan cara lain yang berbeda,’ tutur Joel Osteen sambil menjelaskan Gereja Lakewood telah berdiri sejak 60 tahun. ‘’Kami tidak pernah menutup pintu gereja. Kami membuka pintu untuk menerima siapapun, yang butuh tempat penampungan,’’ lanjutnya.
Selasa malam, Gereja Lakewood memasang foto-foto pengungsi membanjiri ruang dalam gereja di akun Twitternya. Bekerjasama dengan Pemda Houston para relawan, gereja kristen tersebut menampung ratusan pengungsi di lantai dasar. ‘’Sebaiknya jangan gunakan lantai bawah karena khawatir akan kebanjiran,’’ bunyi Twitter mereka.
